Tedros Adhanom: WHO chief may face genocide charges
An American economist nominated for the Nobel peace prize has called for the head of the World Health Organisation to be prosecuted for genocide over his alleged involvement in directing Ethiopia’s security forces.
David Steinman accused Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, 55, who took over at the WHO three years ago, of being one of three officials in control of the Ethiopian security services from 2013 to 2015.
Dr Tedros was the country’s health minister from 2005 to 2012 and its foreign minister until 2016, when his Tigray People’s Liberation Front party was the main member of the ruling coalition.
Mr Steinman, an economist and campaigner nominated for the peace prize last year, lodged the complaint at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
He claimed that Dr Tedros “was a crucial decision maker in relation to security service actions that included killing, arbitrarily detaining and torturing Ethiopians”.

IRC statement on death of staff member in Ethiopia

New York, NY, December 10, 2020 — The IRC regrets to confirm the killing of a staff member in Hitsats Refugee Camp in Shire, Ethiopia. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague; our in-country staff are the very heart of our work and are key in our ability to provide support and assistance to our clients. Communication with the area is extremely difficult and we are still working to gather and confirm the details surrounding the events that led to the death of our colleague.

Ethiopia’s Tigray region has been experiencing an intense bout of conflict since early November, which has forced almost 50,000 people to seek refuge in Sudan. The IRC is working in Tigray to support 96,000 refugees in four camps with a range of services, including clean water, sanitation, and education.

We call on all parties to the conflict to agree to an immediate ceasefire and ensure civilians, including refugees and aid workers, are protected and able to continue to access and deliver life saving services.

Oromia High court release Lidetu Ayalew in bail

Oromia Regional State Supreme Court, Eastern Branch has this morning ruled to release from police custody prominent opposition politician Lidetu Ayalew, founder of the Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP), on 30, 000 birr bond.
Oromia Supreme Court’s ruling came after its previous decision requesting Oromia region prosecutors to amend the charges against Lidetu which accused him of contravening Ethiopia’s newly enacted Firearm Administration & Control Proclamation 1177/2020, Art. 22/3.
The prosecutors have therefore amended the charges with “attempt to dismantle federal and regional governments.”
Lidetu’s defense team have appealed the the court that the amended charge doesn’t prohibit their client from leaving the police custody in Bishoftu on bond and following his case from outside.
In today’s hearing Oromia Supreme Court has therefore ruled that Lidetu has the right for bond and allowed his to post the 30, 000 birr.
The police have in the past repeatedly disregarded court rulings to release Lidetu on bail. Via Addis Standard
