#Abiy #Erdoğan #Ethiopia #Turkey Turkish President Recep Tayyip 0has backed a peaceful resolution to Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict that has displaced tens of thousands and left millions hungry. He also said Turkey was willing to mediate between Ethiopia and Sudan to resolve a separate border dispute.
Erdoğan told visiting Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday that the war-hit country’s “peace and integrity is important to us”. “If the situation deteriorates, all countries in the region will be affected,” Erdogan told a joint media appearance with Abiy.
Northern Ethiopia has been racked by fighting since last November, when Abiy sent troops to topple the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the region’s then governing party.
Tens of thousands of Ethiopians have fled to refugee camps in Sudan, to escape a conflict that the United Nations said has pushed 400,000 people into famine-like conditions.
In July, the UN warned more than 100,000 children in Tigray could suffer life-threatening malnutrition in the next 12 months. Ankara and Addis Ababa have friendly relations and the two leaders pledged to boost economic cooperation and trade.
Abiy said the two countries’ relationship was built on “mutual respect and trust”.
Erdoğan and Abiy oversaw the signing of military agreements, including a military financial cooperation deal. Details of the deals were not immediately available.
Meanwhile Erdoğan, who hosted General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman al-Burhan, chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, in Ankara last week, said Turkey was also prepared to contribute toward a peaceful resolution of a dispute between Ethiopia and Sudan over the Al-Fashaga region.
“We are ready to make any contribution to an amicable resolution of the problem, including mediation,” he said. #Aljazeera

France suspends military cooperation deal with Ethiopia Paris has suspended an agreement on military cooperation between France and Ethiopia, sources said Friday amid the ongoing conflict in the African country’s north.
The deal agreed between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Emmanuel Macron in March 2019 was suspended at the beginning of July, two official sources with knowledge of the issue told Agence France-Presse (AFP), asking not to be named.
Macron and Abiy had made an agreement in which France would loan 85 million euros ($100 million) to support landlocked Ethiopia’s ambition to build a navy.
Abiy was awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in helping to end the decadeslong conflict with neighboring Eritrea.
But international partners have grown increasingly concerned with his leadership as the conflict in the northern Tigray region intensifies.
Northern Ethiopia has been wracked by conflict since November when Abiy sent troops to topple the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which dominated national politics for nearly three decades before Abiy took office.
He said the move came in response to TPLF attacks on federal army camps. But while Abiy promised a swift victory, more than nine months later the TPLF has made advances into the neighboring Afar and Amhara regions.

Ethiopia armed group says it has alliance with Tigray forces
A militant leader in Ethiopia says his group has struck a military alliance with the Tigray forces now pressing toward the country’s capital, as the conflict that erupted in the Tigray region last year spreads into other parts of Africa’s second-most populous country.
“The only solution now is overthrowing this government militarily, speaking the language they want to be spoken to,” Oromo Liberation Army leader Kumsa Diriba, also known as Jaal Marroo, told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday. #Ethiopia #Tigray #Oromia #Amhara #TPLF #PP #OLF
Qatar Bank Asks U.S. Court to Order Eritrea to Pay $300 Million Debt Qatar National Bank QPSC, the Middle East’s biggest lender, asked a U.S. court to order Eritrea to pay nearly $300 million of debt after the Horn of Africa nation refused to participate in two lawsuits.
The Doha-based bank requested a judgment by default from a federal court in Washington on Friday after Eritrea failed to respond to the bank’s claim seeking to enforce a U.K. ruling in 2019. QNB alleges that President Isaias Afwerki’s government went to drastic lengths to avoid being served with key documents.
