Oromia High court release Lidetu Ayalew in bail

Oromia Regional State Supreme Court, Eastern Branch has this morning ruled to release from police custody prominent opposition politician Lidetu Ayalew, founder of the Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP), on 30, 000 birr bond.
Oromia Supreme Court’s ruling came after its previous decision requesting Oromia region prosecutors to amend the charges against Lidetu which accused him of contravening Ethiopia’s newly enacted Firearm Administration & Control Proclamation 1177/2020, Art. 22/3.
The prosecutors have therefore amended the charges with “attempt to dismantle federal and regional governments.”
Lidetu’s defense team have appealed the the court that the amended charge doesn’t prohibit their client from leaving the police custody in Bishoftu on bond and following his case from outside.
In today’s hearing Oromia Supreme Court has therefore ruled that Lidetu has the right for bond and allowed his to post the 30, 000 birr.
The police have in the past repeatedly disregarded court rulings to release Lidetu on bail. Via Addis Standard
